Floriana looking to defend two-goal lead at Shamrock Rovers in Champions League

Floriana will be looking to create history when they travel to Shamrock Rovers in a bid to secure qualification to the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League (kick-off: 9pm).

Daniel Portela’s men have a healthy two-goal advantage to defend at the Tallaght Stadium following last week’s 2-0 win at the Centenary Stadium.

A goal in each half by Robert Muric and Moustapha Jah put the Greens well in control and within sight of a second qualifying round tie against either FC Ararat of Armenia or Riga FC of Latvia.

Last week, Floriana showed great defensive organisation to fend off Shamrock Rovers’ attack and more of the same is needed if they are to complete the job against the Irish champions.

Despite holding a healthy advantage, the Greens will be aware that their work is far from done as Shamrock Rovers will be determined to turn around the tie and stay on course to secure a place in the League Phase of a UEFA club competition for a third successive year.

Shamrock Rovers coach Stephen Bradley told the Irish media yesterday that he was still confident that his team can turn the tie around despite their two-goal deficit.

“I know we can do it,” he told RTÉ Sport yesterday.

“It’s not easy in any game (overcoming a 2-0 deficit) but they’re the best players in the country for a reason and have been for a long time.

“We’ll be fine. We just need to go back to our levels, do what we do. And what will be will be at the end of it.”

Shamrock Rovers will be without Matt Healy, who was shown a red card in the first leg, but welcome back in the fray Cape Verde international Roberto ‘Pico’ Lopes, who has just returned after his historic participation in the 2026 World Cup.

“When you take a player of Pico’s leadership quality out of any team, you’re gonna miss him”, Bradley said.

“We have to remember, he’s been away for six weeks, and the players have performed really, really well. We’re top of the league.

“But there’s no doubt taking Pico out of our team, or if you took him out of any team in the country, will hurt, so it’s great to have him back.”

As for tonight’s clash, Bradley is hoping for a huge night from the home support.

“We need the fans,” Bradley said.

“We know Tallaght and European nights can be special, when we fill it out. We’re going to need their energy on Tuesday night, there’s no doubt.

“If they do their part, I am sure the players will show up and do ours, and it has the makings to be a special night.”
