Ħamrun Spartans’ bid to sign defender Alex Kakuba is on the verge of collapsing after the Ugandan has had a change of heart and informed the Reds that he will not accept their offer of joining the Premier League club.
Reports earlier this week had said that the Spartans had agreed terms with Kakuba and the Portugal-based player was expected to arrive in Malta this weekend to put pen to paper on a one-year contract.
However, that deal looks set to fall through after the player has told the Ħamrun Spartans officials that he will not make the move for personal reasons.
Kakuba was seen as an exciting signing for the Spartans as throughout his career he managed to play in the top flight of Portuguese football with Clube Desportivo Feirense.
He also had a spell in Greece with PAS Giannina FC.
The Spartans are understood to be trying to convince the player to honour their verbal agreement but if he sticks to his decision he will become the second player to turn down a move after reaching a deal after Montenegrin Darko Bulatovic also decided against moving to Maltese football.
After this latest twist, it is expected that the Spartans will again head into the market in a bid to sign two defenders after earlier this month Orestis Nikolopoulos moved to Ayia Napa where he reunited with former coach Manuele Blasi and team-mates Matteo Cinquini and Marco Criaco.
