Despite having a player sent off early in the game, Sliema Wanderers found no difficulty in beating Senglea Athletic
Andrea Pisanu’s side were clearly a better side right from start and despite the dismissal of Sylvano Comvalius, they soon regained composure and went on to dictate matters.
The Wanderers were reduced to ten men on 17 minutes after a rough tackle by Comvalius on Dejan Kukic.
However, his dismissal hardly affected Sliema and on 24 minutes, Gilmar pounced on a cross from the left, only to be floored by Dejan Kukic inside the area. The Brazilian converted from the penalty spot to put the Wanderers ahead.
On 36 minutes, Senglea went close with a Dibola Diwoto effort, served inside the area by Chris Matombo. A minute later, substitute Jean Paul Farrugia received the ball inside the area, but his conclusion was blocked by Matthew Farrugia.
Four minutes from the end of the first half, Farrugia concluded a good move on the left with a shot from the left which was turned into a corner by the Senglea custodian.
The Wanderers remained in the driving seat and eight minutes in the second half, they went close once again with a great freekick by Gilmar which was tipped over the bar by Farrugia.
One minute later, Sliema doubled the score. Gilmar sent Farrugia through and the latter advanced into the area before beating the Senglea goalkeeper.
Farrugia had a shot from the edge of the area partially saved by the Senglea keeper on 65 minutes.
A Jan Tanti freekick was parried by Jake Galea on 74 minutes and a few seconds later, the same player came to the rescue clearing the ball into safety following an inviting pass by Myles Beerman, anticipating Gilmar before the Brazilian could conclude.
Two minutes in added time, Senglea had Diwoto sent off with a straight red card.
