Frans Bugeja has decided to step down from his position as president of the Malta Billiards and Snooker Association.
Bugeja has been one of the cornerstones of the sport of billiards and snooker in Malta and has been involved in the governing body for over 50 years.
However, in a statement, the MBSA said that after medical advice, Bugeja will not seek re-election.
“After receiving medical advice, the president of the Malta Billiards and Snooker Association, Frans Bugeja, after over 50 years of service to this association, will not contest for this position.”
Under his presidency, the MBSA obtained some remarkable success which included the organization of two European snooker tournaments, including for teams, Masters and the U-21 Championships.
Added to that, Bugeja also led the MBSA to organize the first World Snooker Federation Championship.
“With the help and co-operation of the Hon. Chris Agius, Dr Clifton Grima and Mark Cutajar, the CEO of SportMalta, the MBSA fulfilled the dream of opening its own academy in Ħamrun,” the MBSA said.
“Added to that, there was also a major improvement in the financial assistance awarded to the governing body thanks to a good relationship with SportMalta and the Maltese Olympic Committee.”
The MBSA also said that Bugeja is the only snooker referee examiner in Malta and was also the first international Maltese referee to officiate in the first World Billiards Championship that was played here in 1970-71.
