Birkirkara to face Cluj in UEFA Women’s Champions League

Birkirkara women were handed a stern test in the upcoming Women’s Champions League first qualifying round after the draws were held in Nyon, on Thursday.

The Stripes were drawn away at Romanian champions Olimpia Cluj.

The first qualifying round will take place on November 3 and November 4 after the 2020/2021 schedule had to be rescheduled following the coronavirus pandemic that disrupted the previous campaign dates.

The winners progress to join second qualifying round, with the ten victors at that stage then joining the 22 clubs given byes to the round of 32.

This will be the third time that the Stripes face Cluj. The previous two encounters were in 2012 and 2014 with the Romanian winning both ties.

Birkirkara will be representing Malta in this competition for the fourth straight year with their best record achieved in 2018, when the Stripes chalked up their first point in Europe when holding Wales’ Cardiff Met Ladies to a 2-2 draw in their final qualifier.
