Watch: Argentine duo Doffo, Soldano hail Maradona’s greatness

The loss of footballing legend Diego Maradona is still a fresh memory for football fans, in particular in his beloved native Argentina.

Tributes continue to pour for the 1986 World Cup winner as his football milestones will remain engraved in the history of this game for ever.

Argentine duo Pablo Doffo and Sergio Soldano joined Sports Desk as they recalled their memories about the former Argentina and Napoli captain.

Both Doffo and Soldano are familiar faces to Maltese football. Since arriving in Malta in 2006, Doffo has played with several clubs including Floriana and Hibernians, and now he is at Marsaxlokk in the BOV Challenge League.

Soldano, on his part, is remembered for his excellent work at the helm of the U-17 national team in the build-up for the UEFA U-17’s European Championships which was hosted on our islands in 2014.

For the latter, Maradona meant a lot as Soldano crossed paths with him several times during his footballing career, first in a youth tournament and then during training sessions with the U-20’s of the Albiceleste.

Doffo, on his part, spent his youth career at Boca Juniors where he had the opportunity to meet Maradona while serving as a ball boy during a 1997 game between the Xeneizes and Racing Club, at the La Bombonera.

Both Doffo and Soldano shed light on the greatness of Maradona, both on and off the field as they speak about the love and attachment that El Pibe de Oro had towards the people of his country.

Asked about the sense of pride in having two of the best players of all-time hailing from Argentina, in Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi, Doffo underlined that for them means a lot and that means that their country has managed to transform the Beautiful Game into art.

On the other hand, Soldano pointed out that among the best players in the world, there are three Argentines without a doubt – Alfredo di Stefano, Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi.
