Lija Athletic squad in mandatory quarantine, next fixtures postponed

Lija Athletic became the latest team to be serving a mandatory quarantine due to a rise in COVID-19 cases on Tuesday.

In a statement, the Malta Football Association said that due to COVID-19 issues they were postponing Lija Athletic’s upcoming Premier League fixtures against Floriana, scheduled to be played on Thursday, and Tarxien Rainbows, on January 10.

“Due to issues related to COVID-19, Lija Athletic FC’s upcoming BOV Premier League fixtures – against Floriana FC (7 January, 2021) and Tarxien Rainbows FC (10 January, 2021) – will be rescheduled to a later date,” the local governing body said in a statement.

“The matches are being postponed in accordance with the Malta FA special rules applicable to domestic competitions due to COVID-19 after a number of players from Lija Athletic’s senior squad returned a positive test.”

Meanwhile, the Malta FA also announced that the National Youth League match from Section A between Valletta and Pietà Hotspurs has also been postponed to a later date.
