Hibernians BC given space for new pavilion

Hibernians Basketball Club will be looking towards further expansion after signing an agreement with SportMalta which grants them a new space to build a new basketball pavilion, which will be dedicated to the sport.

In a press conference at the Paola Pavilion on Thursday, Hibs secretary Nadia Vella explained the land, which had become desolate land in recent years, has been given to the club on a 45 year lease.

“This is a very important event for us because now we will have the beautiful opportunity to expand our sporting operations,” Vella said.

The club which is home to around 250 athletes has faced major expenses, reaching the 10,000 euros mark because Vella said they would have to make use of four venues to cater to all their age-groups.

On his part, Parliamentary Secretary for Sport, Recreation and Voluntary Organisations Dr. Clifton Grima sounded his enthusiasm for such an agreement and referred to the Malta Basketball Association’s recent meetings with SportMalta regarding direction for the sport. 

Dr. Grima explained that growth, especially at the grassroots level is at the heart of discussions. He proceeded in saying that both parties have since been working on plans as well as direct investment into professional coaching and the athletes themselves, whom he referred to as the ambassadors of our country.

With the Small Nations Games taking place in Malta in 2023, Dr. Grima said sport should become an integral part of our lives, and our aim to be winning a record number of medals.

“The process is long and has many obstacles that with the concerned parties, we will look to turn into opportunity so that we can make a leap in level both on a national level as well as internationally,” Dr. Grima said.
