Updated: Francesca Curmi beaten in final at ITF tournament in Monastir

Francesca Curmi missed out on winning her first-ever Futures Event as the Maltese tennis sensation was beaten by Polish player Weronika Falkowska in the ITF Monastir tournament on Sunday.

Curmi headed into the match on the back of an impressive run at the Tunisia tournament which saw her become the first Maltese tennis player to reach the final of Futures Event.

However, on Sunday Falkowska, ranked 726 in the WTA Tour, proved too strong for the Maltese youngster as she won the match 6-2 6-0.

Despite the defeat, Curmi can still be proud of her achievements after a week of impressive performances.

On Saturday, Curmi defied the odds when she had the better of Slovakian player Victoria Morvayova, who is ranked 561 in the WTA tour.

Curmi prevailed in straights sets, 7-6 6-3 to become the first Maltese player to reach a final in a Futures Event and further underlines her status as one of the rising stars in local sport.

Earlier this week, Curmi had to go past two qualifying round before having the better of Dmitruk, of Belarus in the first round and then Olga Gavrila, from Romania, in the second round.

On Friday, Curmi stunned tournament top seed Risa Ushijima 6-4 6-1 to reach the semi-finals.

Curmi will now be up against Polish player Weronika Falkowska, of Poland, in Sunday’s final.
