Sam Deguara has been on a roll since joining Tokyo Excellence at the end of 2020 and has continued to add to his already incredible tally with another double-digit game over the weekend. The Times of Malta Sportsdesk looks at Deguara and other Maltese professionals plying their trade overseas in another segment of ‘Maltese Abroad’.
JAPAN
Sam Deguara had another positive weekend with the Tokyo Excellence as he scored big in back-to-back wins over the Gifu Swoops on Saturday and Sunday.
In the side’s first game, Deguara scored 20 points as the Excellence won 85-68. The Malta center also grabbed nine boards and made two blocks in his 20.27 minutes on court.
The next day, the Excellence got another blowout win, this time winning 86-52. Deguara scored nine points with 12 rebounds and another two blocks in around 22 minutes.
Deguara and the Tokyo Excellence face the Kagoshima Rebnize on Saturday and Sunday.
USA
Sophie Abela’s Otero Rattlers had an impressive start to their week as they cruised past Lamar Community College 90-53 on Monday. This follows their postponed game against Western Nebraska Community College on Friday.
Abela started and scored five points and assisted one basket in 18 minutes on court. She also made two steals and blocked one attempt.

The side’s next game is against Lamar once again on Wednesday.
In the Mountain East Conference finals, Kristy Galea scored three, but the Alderson Broaddus Battlers fell to eventual champions Charleston 50-73 on Wednesday.
Also a starter, Galea grabbed four defensive boards, blocked one and made a steal while assisting three makes for her side in 27 minutes.
UK
Loughborough Riders guard Sasha Lecuyer got eight points in a 73-64 win against the Worchester Wolves on Saturday.
In around 30 minutes on court as a starter, Lecuyer also grabbed two boards.
The side’s next game will be against the BA London Lions on Saturday.
ITALY
Kurt Cassar’s Janus Fabriano continued to dominate the Serie B standings last weekend as they beat Luciana Mosconi Ancona 72-66 on Sunday.
Cassar started and played for 20 minutes, scoring five while grabbing two boards.
The side has already ascertained themselves of first place and will play in the Italian Cup in April.
