The Malta Association of Sports Lawyers have made an appeal to the government to consider an exemption catered for under Legal Notice 93 that bans the organisation of sporting activities until April 11.
The Superintendent for Health, Profs. Charmaine Gauci, revealed on Friday that talks are ongoing with the Malta Football Association over the possibility of giving an exemption to the senior national team to host Russia in a World Cup qualifier on March 24 at the National Stadium.
“The Malta Association of Sports Lawyers (MASL) strongly urges the Superintendent of Public Health and the relevant authorities concerned to consider, and where necessary issue, exemptions catered for under Legal Notice 93 of 2021 which allow Maltese national teams who are currently impacted by the measurements announced earlier this week to continue being allowed to train and participate in sporting activities, under strict abidance to COVID-19 preventative measures as well as any other conditions imposed by the Superintendent ,” the MASL said in a statement.
The lawyers association are also recommending that these exemptions should be also extended to individual athletes so that they continue their training regime for major events.
“MASL also recommends that the Maltese authorities should consider extending such special permission to individual athletes who for a valid reason/s need to continue practising their respective sports together with their respective coaches/support team,” MASL said.
“Such permission should be granted in the best interests of sporting merit to ensure that the efforts and sacrifices undertaken by such athletes/national teams on a daily basis are not hindered and such athletes/national teams can continue flying the Malta flag high and proud in their respective sporting competitions whilst at the same time adhering to the strict return to play protocols and COVID-19 protective measures.”
