Johann Said reappointed as Floriana FC president

Johann Said has been reappointed as the president of Floriana FC, the Premier League club announced.

For Said this will be his second spell as the club supremo after he had been at the helm of the Premier League club between 2009 and 2011, a two-year spell that was highlighted by the club winning the FA Trophy after defeating arch rivals Valletta in the final.

The appointment of Said was made during the newly-elected club committee’s first meeting that was held on Thursday night.

“I believe that this is a strong sign of trust towards Floriana FC,” Said said in a statement.

“Now it’s our duty to build on all the good work that was already there and effect the changes needed so that the club will operate on a more sustainable model for the current reality of Maltese football.

“We will be asking for the backing of all the Floriana people so that the club takes the place it deserves.”

The club committee is formed almost entirely by persons who did not serve in the previous administration, with the only exception being Dione Borg who retained his place as general secretary.

Borg will also fill the role of club council member.

Matthew Carbone was appointed as chief executive while Dr Shazoo Ghaznavi will act as vice-president. Edward Zammit will fill the role of treasurer.

The other members forming the club are Mario Galea, Karl Azzopardi, Jordan Camilleri, Jacques Grima, Calvin Sammut and Stefan Sammut.

Anthony Gafa will act as team manager while Dr Hugh Peralta was also reconfirmed as chairman of the club nursery.

The new club committee have their eyes firmly set on strengthening the club on all aspects.

In fact, the Times of Malta can confirm that the appointment of a new first-team coach is on top of the new agenda.

It is understood that the club is likely to bring to the club an Italian coach who will be accompanied by his technical staff and negotiations are already progressing well.

At the same time, the Greens are looking to revamp the squad after a very disappointing 2020-21 season.

Last term, Floriana FC left much to be desired as although they were tipped to mount a serious challenge to retain their Premier League crown, they ended up fighting to retain their place in the Premier League.

To this end, the club is looking to bring in quality reinforcements to restore the team’s place among the elite of Maltese football.  

Added to that the club committee is also looking step up their work to embark on the club’s project at the Independence Arena that would yield the club much-needed financial stability.
