Santa Lucia FC are on the verge of signing former France international winger Mathieu Valbuena, the Times of Malta can confirm.
The Challenge League side are working hard to try and bolster their squad in their bid to secure promotion to the Malta Premier League, and their Turkish president, Enes Usta, is doing everything he can to attract top-quality players to join his team.
The story of Valbuena’s imminent move to Santa Lucia FC was broken by Turkish journalist Salim Manav, who also confirmed the information to the Times of Malta.
Sources told Times of Malta that the Santa Lucia president has an agreement in place with Valbuena to move to the Maltese Challenge League side.
The French attacking midfielder, 41, was renowned for his creativity, pace, and dribbling, nicknamed “Le Petit Vélo” for his stature and style. Primarily an attacking midfielder, he starred for Marseille – winning the 2010 Ligue 1 and multiple Coupe de la Ligue titles – and earned 52 France caps while scoring 8 goals.
He played in the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.
His career spans clubs in France, Russia, Turkey, Greece, and Cyprus, with three Greek Super League titles at Olympiacos.
Last season, he was on the books of Olympiakos B where he made 11 appearances, scoring three goals and registering three assists.
