Ħamrun Spartans will be leaving the islands on Sunday morning for a week-long training camp in Austria in preparation for the new season.

The newly-crowned Malta champions started their preparations for the new season last month but saw their hopes of playing Champions League football dashed by UEFA this week after the European governing body of football rejected the Spartans appeal to compete in this season’s top club competition.

The Spartans are now understood to be consulting their lawyers to see if they will file their appeal in front of the Court of Arbitration of Sport in Lausanne.

In the meantime, the Spartans will continue with their pre-season preparations under the charge of coach Mark Buttigieg and his assistant Stefan Sultana.

The Reds will leave for Austria early this morning where they will intensify their preparations for the new season.

During their stay in Austria, Ħamrun Spartans will play two friendly matches against two Austrian sides.

On Tuesday, they will be up against Union Gurten, a regional league side from Austria.

The Spartans will play a second friendly match on Friday against another Austrian side, SK Vorwarts Steyr, who ply their trade in the Austrian second division.  Both matches will kick off at 7pm.

The Ħamrun Spartans contingent are due to return to Malta on Saturday.
