Malta international Kurt Cassar has left Janus Fabriano, the club announced on Friday. This comes after a very successful second half of the 20202/21 season with the now promoted team as Cassar proved instrumental for Fabriano’s success.
“Ristopro Janus Fabriano announces that Kurt Cassar will not be part of the biancoblu roster in the 2021/22 season; the Maltese center says goodbye after a promotion won as a starter in the quintet, with high caliber performances in the decisive challenge,” Janus Fabriano said in a statement.
The 22-year-old had joined the then Serie B club back in January from Pallacanestro Orzinuovi, where he had admitted playing minutes had been scarce. In an interview with the Times of Malta in May, Cassar had explained that Fabriano had approached him to be part of their promotion project, one which has now been completed.
Cassar, who was featured as one of the top 100 young players in Europe by Eurospects Ratings in November, has long said that his level of play is that of Serie A2.
However, it is said that the Malta center is set to play another season in Serie B with Talos Basketball Ruvo next season.
The Puglia side finished fourth in the Serie B Group D last season with a 22-14 record. They then went on to lose in the first round of the playoffs with a 3-1 scoreline to Belcorvo Rucker San Vendemiano, the team which eventually faced Fabriano in the next round – a series which Cassar’s side won 3-2.
Cassar averaged 10.29 points per game and 6.86 rebounds in this season’s playoffs, even achieving two double-doubles in the championship finals against Cividale.
Ahead of this switch, Cassar will be with the Malta national team as the side aim to retain their title in the FIBA Small Countries Championship in August.
