Lecuyer promoted to Leicester Riders

Malta international Sasha Lecuyer has earned a promotion to the Leicester Rider’s first team in the Women’s British Basketball League (WBBL), the club announced on Monday.

Lecuyer, part of the Malta squad in this summer’s FIBA Small Countries of Europe Games, had put up impressive performances in the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) with the Loughborough Riders and Charnwood – the two affiliate clubs associated with the Leicester Riders.

In the WNBL last season, the Malta guard put up a 5.3 points per game, three rebounds, and two assists average. This was in a season which saw the Loughborough Riders make it to the post-season back in May.

Speaking to the club’s media, Lecuyer showed her excitement ahead of the new season.

“I can’t wait to be on court with all the new players and coaches,” Lecuyer said.

“I’m really excited for the new season and looking forward to continuing to work hard and push forward for the new season. I’m delighted that my journey with Leicester Riders continues.”

This promotion comes as an added boost for Lecuyer after her first call up to the senior national team this summer as the youngest player on the roster at 19. She averaged 1.3 points and two rebounds as the team managed to finish in fourth place in Cyprus.

Lecuyer is currently a student-athlete at Loughborough, moving up the ranks from Charnwood college on a training program that was carried out following the award of a Sports Scholarship financed by the Government of Malta.

Riders General manager Russell Levenston showed his appreciation of having an up-and-coming player like her.

“It’s great to see a player come through the Riders system. Progressing from Charnwood College and going on to study at Loughborough while also moving up from D1 and being a part of the WBBL roster,” Levenston said.
