Malta Triathlon Federation athlete Kai Azzopardi, who also forms part of the Malta Youth Olympic Programme, was one of 20 European athletes who was recently selected by the Pho3nix Foundation to attend this inaugural fully funded, Pho3nix Futures Programme training Camp in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Athletes taking part in this mentorship programme were from 14 different European countries and practicing different sports.
Founder and ambassador of Pho3nix Foundation, Sebastian Kulczyk, set up this foundation for the love of sport.
This training camp was hosted by four-time triathlon World Champion Chris Mc Cormack and co-hosted by Olympian track and field athlete John Steffensen.
Azzopardi had the opportunity to meet and train with various other Olympians and business leaders who organised various workshops, activities, and discussions throughout the camp with the aim to provide the building blocks for their future.
Amongst these mentors were, Olympic gold medallist Nicola Spirig, and world champion and Olympian Aleksandra Miroslaw.
The cherry on the cake was when the athletes had the opportunity to chat with eight-time Olympic gold medallist sprinter Usain Bolt during their presentation Gala night.
Azzopardi said that this was an unforgettable and unique experience which he will cherish forever and is really looking forward for the next one.
This was a very fruitful year for Azzopardi after placing first overall and first in his age group out of 140 athletes at the Trumer Super Sprint Triathlon (open for all ages) held in Obertrum am See, Austria last July.
