Three young players from Sirens ASC will spend the next few months away from our shores as they continue their waterpolo education with foreign clubs.
Gabriel Melillo has joined Fordham waterpolo team in the US for the next four years.
The talented Melillo, who has collected 23 caps for Malta, playing for the U-17 and U-19 teams, is one of nine additions made by the US side.
Fordham waterpolo head coach Brian Bacharach was particularly impressed by the talents of Melillo.
“Gabriel has a determination about him that is infectious,” Bacharach told the club’s website.
“We immediately saw that through his play in the pool. He has a motor that does not stop, which is so important for a center defender.
“He has spent his high school years traveling to all the top tournaments in the world with the Maltese National Team as well as his summers playing in the competitive top-level Malta Senior League.
“We are excited for Gabriel to bring this great experience with him to the Fordham water polo programme.”
Melillo has already settled down in the US as since his arrival he has already featured for the team in three tournaments and two league matches.
On the other hand, Gianni Farrugia will be heading to Hungary to play for top side Ferencvaros.
Farrugia will be working with former Sirens foreign player Zsolt Varga who is currently the coach of the Hungarian giants.
No doubt, this will be a great learning experience for the young Sirens player.
The other Sirens player to spend the next few months abroad is Gianni Galea Curmi.
Galea Curmi will pursue his studies in Italy at La Sapienza and during his time there he will join Sporting Club Tuscolano Pallanuoto.
