Azzopardi confirmed his intention to contest the election in a post on his facebook page.

“I proudly announce that I have accepted this invitation and am ready to humbly give my small contribution as others have done in the past and till this present day in the best interest of local sport.
“Looking forward to meeting all 45 affiliated national sport associations during the coming weeks to share ideas, discuss views and most important of all listen to each and every one’s unique needs and expectations.
“Above all, let’s be ambitious for our sportsmen and sportswomen to make their next step forward.”
Joe Cassar, the current general secretary will also be vying to retain the post he has held for almost three decades.
