St George’s FC issued a statement to express their disappointment after the government ignored their pleas to be awarded a site on which to build a football stadium and have their own facilities.
On Monday, the Minister of Finance Clyde Caruana announced that in 2022, the government will be constructing a new football stadium for Msida St Joseph.
The club said in its statement that in the last few weeks they had stepped up their pressure to try and convince the authorities to have their own football grounds but their pleas fell on deaf ears.
“After the government’s budget speech that was read out on Monday, if there was someone who was happy about it were certainly not St George’s FC,” the St George’s FC committee said in a statement.
“We have been resisting from writing publicly our feelings, but after yesterday it was announced that a ground will be constructed for Msida St Joseph we simply could not remain silent. We have been pleading with the authorities to have our own football stadium and facilities, particularly under this administration, where we had intensified our pressure.
“As a club, we feel hurt and disappointed and we will not stop writing and informing the people of Cospicua that every government abandoned us. He abandoned us and our children who are forced to go and register with other football nurseries.
“You have left us surrounded with clubs who have their own facilities and you left us training in a school ground that is abandoned and that it doesn’t even have toilet facilities for our players.
“This is the first-ever football club in Malta, a club that until today the government has left us with nothing but crave for what others have.”
