Gżira United suffered a huge blow following the news that defender Steve Borg is set for a long spell on the sidelines after suffering an injury in his adductor tendon during the World Cup qualifier against Cyprus on Monday.

The Malta defender suffered the injury in the closing stages of Monday’s match that saw the national team grabbed a dramatic injury-time equaliser through Jurgen Degabriele for a 2-2 draw in Larnaca.

Borg returned to Malta with the national team on Tuesday morning and he was advised to undergo an MRI scan to have a clear prognosis of his injury.

The results of the MRI scan showed that the Gżira United skipper had ruptured his adductor tendon. The first indications showed that the player would have to undergo surgery but on Wednesday it was confirmed that he would not need to go through any form of intervention.

In fact, Borg is now set to start his rehabilitation which is expected to last for the next 12 weeks.

Borg’s injury is a huge blow not only for the national team, as he will miss the final World Cup qualifiers against Croatia and Slovakia next month, but also for his club Gżira United who have already lost a key player to a long-term injury this season.

In fact, the Maroons are already without Ricardo Correa who is recovering from a serious knee injury.

The Maroons return to Premier League action this weekend when they face champions Ħamrun Spartans.
