National team players subsidised by SportMalta to train before going to work

BOV Basketball Leagues to commence Late October

Malta basketball national players are currently benefitting from SportMalta’s flexi scheme that enables players to be excused from their work commitments during the morning to train with the national team.

Paul Sultana, the president of the Malta Basketball Association, told the Times of Malta that SportMalta is subsidising companies that have national team players employed with them to let them train during the mornings before they head to their workplace.

“This is a very important step for the development of our national team players ahead of their commitments in the Games of the Small States of Europe that will be held in Malta in two years’ time,” Sultana told the Times of Malta.

“I am grateful to SportMalta for their support as this initiative is helping us to give our players a better preparation ahead of key international commitments and at the same time help us to build a competitive team ahead of the 2023 GSSE.”

Meanwhile, the BOV Basketball Leagues will get under way on October 30 and will see the return of spectators at the Ta’ Qali Pavilion as well as teams fielding foreign players as we are accustomed to.

Sultana and Stefan Abela, manager, CSR and community relations at Bank of Valletta, addressed a press conference giving details of the upcoming season and the fixtures of the BOV Knockout competitions were also drawn during the same event.

Speaking during the event, MBA president Sultana said: “We have seen some very entertaining Basketball in the first competitions of the season, with the teams being very balanced, with high scores, testament to the improvement of the local players and the re-introduction of the foreigners.’

“We are looking forward to this year’s competitions, especially with the return of spectators at the Basketball Pavilion, an element that was sorely missed these past two years,” said Stefan Abela.

“As a long-term partner of the Malta Basketball Association, as well as of major sports activities in Malta, we wish good luck to all the teams and will be keen to see who will lift the BOV Knockout Trophies on Freedom Day next year.”
