Watch: Sassuolo’s Bugeja delighted with goal as she eyes improvement

Haley Bugeja returned on the scoresheet as she scored the all-important goal for Sassuolo in their 1-0 victory over Napoli in the Serie A Femminile, on Saturday afternoon.

It was Bugeja’s first goal for Sassuolo since scoring a brace in her final game of the 2020/2021 season against Empoli, in what was her professional debut.

Speaking to the club’s official channels after the game, Bugeja dedicated the goal to her family and pointed out how difficult the recent months were for her.

“I am in a better position now and I am really happy to have returned in acton,” Bugeja said.

“Nonetheless, I have to continue work hard in order to regain my best possible shape.”

Meanwhile, coach Giampiero Piovani explained how they have been supporting Bugeja throughout her recovery and that they are pleased that finally she has returned, leaving an impact immediately by scoring the winner in her third appearance of the season.

Against Napoli, Bugeja was given the nod from the start for the second consecutive time after starting against Pomigliano in last week’s game.

The Maltese forward was at the right spot at the right time to slot in from close-range and score her 13th goal for Sassuolo since joining the club last season.

Last season, her 12 goals propelled her to become the club’s top scorer ahead of captain Valeria Pirone who this season moved to Roma.

Sassuolo remain second on 24 points, three behind leaders Juventus whom they will face in their next league game on December 4.

Next weekend, Sassuolo will face Serie B side Cesena in their second Coppa Italia game of the season.
