After extensive work was carried out on the site where the first indoor pool of international level will be built in Cottonera, the project has now entered its third and final phase.
In a statement, the Ministry for Education and Sport announced that after the excavation process on the site has now been completed, the construction process of the pool and the public stands have got under way in a project that will cost €14 million.
“This is another project that is being carried out at the moment and that shows the government’s commitment to strengthen the sporting infrastructure in Malta,” Minister for Sport and Education, Clifton Grima, said during a recent visit on the site.
“After we announced details of a €3 million investment in the Athletics Stadium in Marsa to upgrade it to an international level, today we are seeing another project from which acquatic sport in Malta will benefit.”
All projects that are being carried out in the sport sector form part of the National Sports Strategy while the pool project was also past of the electoral manifesto of the Labour party.
The rock cutting process took five months while all the structures that form part of the pool, which include the frame and the roof of the pool, the ventilation system as well as the glass walls, are expected to arrive in March.
The last phase includes the completion of the offices, plant room, food facilities, dressing rooms and showers.
The Cottonera pool will be of an Olympic size of 5,000 square metres, with a wooden roof that is 44 metres long as well as glass walls that cover 44 square metres that will come in line with the standards required by the international swimming federation.
The statement said that the Cottonera SC pool will be equipped with the best technology, which includes bulkheads so that the pool can be split in more than one facilty.
Mark Cutajar, SportMalta CEO, said that this project was done in full respect of the environment and that all the material from the demoliton of the Bocce Dromo has been recycled.
“All projects that are being done by SportMalta have the same aim, to give Maltese athletes the best possible facilities in various sporting disciplines,” Cutajar said.
“This pool is of international level and will be one of the best in the Mediterranean to continue to raise the level of acquatic sport in Malta.”
