UK-based strength and conditioning coach and sport science specialist, Christian Vassallo, has joined the Mediterranean College of Sport as its sports science and research consultant.
The Mediterranean College of Sport, to be located within the St Aloysius College Sport Complex will be a co-educational independent school due to start operating from September 2024.
The college values the importance of sport within the learning process of student-athletes.
The state-of-the-art facilities will house development programmes for students of football, athletics, swimming and waterpolo, giving student-athletes from Year 7 to Year 11 the opportunity to complete their education up to Sixth Form level while honing in on their sporting abilities and strengths.
Vassallo is currently assisting the Mediterranean College of Sport in the setting up of a state-of-the-art Sport Science and Research Centre to be located at the heart of its sport and education complex.
The centre’s key focus will specialise in long-term athletic development for student-athletes, enhancing their sport performance whilst minimising their risk of injury both for the College’s students as well as to the community which it will service.
This will be achieved through the holistic and applied integration of individualised coaching, performance diagnostics, athlete monitoring and pioneering research within the sport science field.
Spearheading this will be a multidisciplinary team of professionals working in tandem towards a singular vision of development unto high performance.
Christian Vassallo, formerly an academy strength and conditioning coach at Arsenal FC Youth Academy and UK emerging strength and conditioning coach of the year (2017), has a Bachelor of Science degree in Sport and Exercise Science from Loughborough University, a Master of Science degree in strength and conditioning from St Mary’s University, Twickenham, and is currently reading for a PhD in Sport Science at Swansea University.
Together with former international Maltese footballer André Schembri, he co-founded Traainer – a tight-knit network of multidisciplinary specialists who together coordinate individual athlete preparation and performance support.
For the past three years, Vassallo has been consulting for various organisations and athletes within elite sport, amongst whom notably include English Premier League and Spanish La Liga footballers, Great Britain hockey players, Hintsa Performance (Formula Racing), and Pioneered Athlete Performance (McLaren Racing).
