Watch: Judo teaches you key values, says Isaac Bezzina

Isaac Bezzina highlighted the core values judo instils in a person as Malta’s leading judoka met with Ben Camille during this week’s edition of GAMEON.

Bezzina has been one of Malta’s leading judokas for several years now and has his eyes firmly set on representing the country in this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, next year’s Games of the Small States of Europe in Malta as well as the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

“Judo has given me the opportunity to come up against some of the best judokas in the world,” Bezzina, whose father Alex Bezzina won a silver medal for Malta in the 1989 GSSE, said.

“Last year, I competed in the Grand Slam competition and I was up against the 2016 Olympic Games silver medallist. It was a great experience for me as it was the first time that I face such a top-level opponent.”

Bezzina said that the sport of value instils key values in the formation of a person.

“You are never too old to practice judo,” Bezzina said with a smile.

“The values that this sport transmits to a person are very important in one’s formation – discipline, self-value and honour.”

Bezzina is one of the top Maltese athletes who is benefitting from the SportMalta flexi scheme that sees sportsmen given time off from their profession to train their favourite discipline.

“The scheme is certainly a step in the right direction as it gives athletes like myself the opportunity to have more time to train and improve their skills,” Bezzina said.

“Such initiatives are very important if Malta is to ever move closer to attain prestigious results on the international scene. We need to create the structure that gives athletes the pathway to improve themselves and improve their performances in major competitions.”
