Watch: El Diablo fly the chequered flag on opening day of Voomquest Championship

The highly-anticipated Enemed Voomquest UIM V2 World Championships took off on Friday morning in St Paul’s Bay.

The three-day powerboat bonanza welcomed the V2 and Cyber Classes.

The supercharged V2 powerboats were out on the water in the afternoon session.  

Making a welcome return after a two year break, the teams were all out for a win however it was Clive Butler and Sammy Grima’s El Diablo who took the honours for the day. 

Asserting their position in front from the word go, they showed they were the team to beat on Friday afternoon in St. Paul’s Bay when they kept their place in the front, beating off Freccia Blu’s valiant attempts to overtake them. 

First out on the water on the day were the the Cyber Class, who is a smaller powerboat, 13 feet long and powered by 25 horsepower engines. 

The Cyber Class is a relatively new class within Voomquest and its drivers also produce a fine display of racing skills.   

Flying the winner’s chequered flag was The Element Racing Team’s 16-year-old driver Celine Farrugia. She had to contend with some tough competition which saw a tactical race through and through. In the end she skillfully edged herself to take the first win of the weekend.

The Enemed Voomquest UIM V2 World Championships return on Saturday with V2 racing starting at 3.30pm.

The Voomquest Enemed UIM V2 World Championship is held under the auspices of the in world governing body UIM and is supported by Enemed, Yachting Malta, Malta Tourism Authority, Seaview Hotel, Chaudron Powerboats, Transport Malta and St. Paul’s Bay Local Council.
