Alexander Fenech announced that he has decided to step down from his post of president of Valletta FC.
Fenech made the announcement just over an hour after Valletta suffered a heart-breaking 2-1 defeat to arch rivals Floriana in the FA Trophy final.
The result ended Valletta’s hopes of playing European football this summer after the Citizens endured a poor Premier League campaign which saw them drop into the Play-Out zone, and out of the running for a place in UEFA club competitions.
“After 12 years involved in the management of the biggest football club in Malta, it’s time for me to make way for new people with new ideas,” Fenech wrote on his facebook page.
“Thanks to everyone who were behind me throughout the years. I gave everything I could to the club. I augur the best success to those who will succeed me.
“Forza Valletta City always.”
Fenech took over the reins of Valletta FC at the start of the season when he was elected as the club president following the departure of Victor Sciriha.
Prior to his appointment as Valletta FC president, Fenech played a key role in Valletta FC administration as he filled the role of vice-president and along with Sciriha masterminded the club’s domination in Maltese football which saw them win every honour in the domestic game.
