Birkirkara St Joseph Sports Club hosted the second race of the four-part race series Go& Fun Sprint Triathlon in Salina last weekend.
Luke McCarron and Danica Bonello Spiteri took the win home.
McCarron exited the water after 10 minutes and eight seconds, nearly a minute ahead of Galea who came out of the water together with Danica Bonello Spiteri. The latter went on to proceed to 20km bike just seconds ahead of Galea.
Third out of the water was Joseph Azzopardi.
Out on the bike course McCarron kept the lead ahead of Galea and Azzopardi, these positions were maintained until the end of the race, which was won by McCarron.
Bonello Spiteri produced a good race, improving on the time she registered in the first race of the series by nearly two minutes.
Behind Bonello Spiteri out of the water were Keira Attard and Juliya Azzopardi Mazur.
Out on the bike course, Krista Kuusijarvi registered the fastest bike split and run.
Despite her efforts, this was not enough to reduce the gap that Bonello Spiteri had obtained in the swim and Kuusijarvi had to settle for second place.
Attard’s advantage in the swim served her well when she beat Azzopardi Mazur for third place.
Club president Ray Grech presented the medals to the top three males and females at the end of the race.
The club also hosted the second race of the Malta Youth Triathlon Series which was a very competitive event in spite of the participants’ young ages.
The top three athletes for Category 1 (Under 9) were Oliver Buccheri, Mickaya Fava and Kruvien Farrugia. Category 2 (Ages 10 – 11) saw Leo Buccheri, Neil Cassar, finish ahead of John Paul Felice. Category 3 (Ages 12-13) was won by Liam Daly ahead of Giuseppe Borg and Zia Fujii, whilst in Category 4 (Over 13) Chylen Fava, Anthony Borg and Nathan Pace finish in first, second and third place respectively.
The BSJ Sprint Triathlon Series are supported by Go&Fun Green Energy Drink.
In a statement, the club expressed its gratitude towards the Naxxar Local Council, Naxxar District Police and Transport Malta for the assistance provided to host this event.
The next race of the Go&Fun BSJ Sprint Triathlon Series and the BSJ Youth Triathlon Series will take place on Sunday, September 4.
