Representatives of the Malta Motorsport Federation, led by president Duncan Micallef, met Dr Clifton Grima, Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation last week.
During the meeting, the governing body representatives informed Dr Grima of some of the projects the MMF is currently working on.
Duncan Micallef said that his Federation is working heavily on three main pillars – the development of our youngsters, giving opportunities to drivers to compete abroad, and the organisation and management of motorsport. The MMF is doing this through the Young Drivers Training Programme, the FIA Motorsport Games, and our Italian colleagues’ help at ACI within the FIA.
All this is possible with the support of SportMalta and the Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation.
Dr Grima acknowledged the projects and confirmed that the government, through his Ministry and SportMalta, is working with federations, including the Malta Motorsport Federation, to assist in improving and sustainability of sports disciplines in Malta.
This effort will lead our athletes to compete and represent Malta in international events, and the officials will manage the sport to improve their skills and professionality, hence improving the level of sport and athletes in Malta.
Jonathan Bruno, secretary of the federation, said that the MMF, through the FIA, found the support of ACI in Italy.
Following this agreement, ACI Sports Executives Marotta and Ferrari got nominated by the Malta Motorsport Federation to manage the Malta Motorsport Commission. The new set-up will keep improving and better organise the various officials and volunteers that run the motorsport events.
Bruno also spoke about the FIA Karting Academy Trophy, where Kian Gauci represents Malta. During the same meeting, Gauci was in Cremona in Italy for the second round of the trophy.
James Fenech, the Education Coordinator of the Young Drivers Training Program, spoke about the programme happening on July 11 and 12.
The programme is suitable for boys and girls aged between 8 and 18 and these kids and young adults will find all the support they need to perform their first race and know what they would need to do to have a brilliant career in motorsport.
After completing the programme, all participants will get a certificate and a report about their strengths and weaknesses.
The programme is not only about driving but focuses on the driver as a complete athlete; hence training will include lifestyle, career management, mental exercises, nutrition, driving techniques, team playing and sportsmanship in a competitive environment.
A team of FIA-chosen professional instructors in their respective fields will be delivering the programme to Maltese youngsters.
Jonathan Tonna, Malta Team Captain for the FIA Motorsport Games, announced that the Malta Motorsport Federation would participate in the 2022 FIA Motorsport Games happening in Marseille in France between October 26 and 30.
Eighty countries, including Malta, will be represented by their local National Sporting Authority. The games shall be at the Circuit Paul Ricard, Veynes and St Baume.
The FIA Motorsport Games combines sport with culture and education, creating an environment that uplifts the values of respect, unity, and equal opportunities.
More than a thousand amateur and professional drivers from ASNs across the globe and all levels of motorsport will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals under the colours of their country’s flag.
Malta shall be competing in Karting Sprint Senior, Karting Sprint Junior, Karting Endurance, Karting Slalom, Drifting and Esports.
