Karl Micallef terminates contract with Spartans, joins Gudja United

Karl Micallef signs his contract in the presence of Gudja president Dr Duncan Borg Myatt

Maltese defender Karl Micallef reached an agreement to terminate his contract with Ħamrun Spartans and has joined fellow Premier League side Gudja United, the Times of Malta can confirm.

Reports in the Maltese media on Wednesday had said that Balzan were set to sign the Malta international defender but the 25-year-old had never struck a deal with the former FA Trophy winners and instead was in advanced talks to join Gudja United, with the deal finalised just over two hours before the deadline of transfers in Malta passed.

At Gudja United, Micallef will reunite with his brother Neil who is also on the books of the southern club.

Micallef, 25, has struggled for first-team football with the Spartans and held talks with the club’s top hierarchy in a bid to terminate his contract to try and embark on a new adventure.

In fact, Micallef made only two brief appearances for the Spartans during their solid UEFA Europa Conference League qualification campaign which saw the team reach the Play Off Round where they were eliminated by Serbian giants Partizan Belgrade.

Micallef is keen to play more regular football as he will be keen to retain his place in Devis Mangia’s national team set-up ahead of next month’s key UEFA Nations League qualifier against Estonia and the home friendly against Israel.

With the Spartans, Micallef played over 130 games, having joined them from Pieta Hotspurs.
