Tributes flow for former MBA vice-president Joe Depasquale Schranz

Tributes poured in on Tuesday for Joseph Depasquale Schranz, after the former Malta Basketball Association (MBA) vice-president passed away Monday night.

The unfortunate news was confirmed by his family on Tuesday with former colleagues offering their condolences.

Depasquale Schranz had been part of the association’s administration since 1970 when he was appointed treasurer, two years after Malta made its international debut against Libya. Eventually, he moved on to occupy the role of general secretary, and the vice-presidential position. He left his post in 2011 following internal disagreements within the association.

Depasquale Schranz was also instrumental in the revision of the Malta Handball Association’s statute back in 2002. He chaired the statute sub-committee for a year-long consultation with member clubs within the association. This led to the formation of its executive committee, based on five positions – president, secretary, finance director, competitions secretary, and a public relations officer.

Joe indeed was a gentleman, a fine gentleman. It was a pleasure and an honour to have worked side by side with him for so many years for the basketball game that we both loved so much. I shall miss him. Basketball had long missed him. Sport will miss him too. Obviously his family will miss him dearly. Dear Joe rest in peace. You deserve it, God bless you. Your old time friend and colleague Lino.
