Swieqi United sign Ghana U-20’s pair, American forward ahead of women’s league opener

Swieqi United women’s team have announced three major coups just a day before they launch their championship with a test against defending champions Birkirkara.

The Owls have brought in three new foreign players which will join Venezuelan defender Rafanny Mendoza and forward Fernanda Peinado, from Brazil.

Two Ghana internationals have moved to Swieqi in Cynthia Konland and Rebecca Atinga.

Konland, born in 2002, was Ghana’s goalkeeper during this summer’s U-20’s Women’s World Cup held in Costa Rica.

She was previously on the books of Pearlpia Ladies of the Ghana top-flight before moving to Malta.

“I am overwhelmed with my move to Swieqi United FC and will give my very best to uplift the image of my new found home. I have always maintained that consistency breeds champions. I wish to use this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Club and my representative Hajia for making this happen,” the Ghana goalkeeper told the club’s official website.

Atinga, also born in 2002, was part of the Ghana U-20’s selection in this summer’s World Cup too. She plays as a right fullback and was recently playing in her country’s top-flight at Halifax Ladies, then at Prison Ladies.

“I am very happy to sign my first professional contract with Swieqi United. It’s a great club with lovely people. This is a massive challenge for me and I will have to double my efforts every day to help the club achieve great things this season,” Atinga told Swieqi United’s social media.

Meanwhile, Swieqi also signed American forward Tatiana Dabney, born in 1997.

Last season, Dabney played with Valadares Gaia FC in the Portuguese top-flight after spending the previous year at CSD Suchitepequez Femenino of Guatemala.

The American player is used mainly as a right winger but can also play as a forward.

“I am excited to be apart of this amazing club. I look forward to representing Swieqi United FC and working to bring a championship to the club this year,” she said on the club’s channels.
