Could play two friendlies against Maltese opposition
Serie A giants Inter are finalising plans for a short training camp in Malta next month, the Times of Malta understands.
Italian football is set for quite a long stoppage from next month as the Italian Serie A will go into a two-month break due to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Reports have been circulating in the Italian media during the past few days that the Nerazzurri have been planning to send the remaining members of the first-team squad, who will not be playing for their respective national teams in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, for a short training camp abroad.
The Italian Serie A will hold its final round of fixtures before the World Cup on November 13, before the quadriennial tournament will get under way on November 20 and is expected to resume on January 4, 2023.
During this seven-week stoppage, the Italian club are planning to organise a short training camp abroad.
Initially it was suggested that Saudi Arabia had been the preferred destination for Simone Inzaghi’s squad to conduct a training camp that would enable them to maintain their fitness ahead of the championship restart on the first week of January.
The Middle Eastern country will already host Inter on January 18 as they will face their neighbouring rivals Milan in the Italian Super Cup.
However, negotiations fell through in the last few days and Italian daily Corriere dello Sport reported on Friday that Malta was in pole position to host the 2021 Italian champions ahead of Turkey and Spain.
No official confirmation of the Malta training camp has been made by Inter so far, but sources have told the Times of Malta that Inter are planning to arrive in Malta on November 17 and spend four days training on our islands.
During their stay here, they are expected to hold two friendly matches, against teams who have yet to be confirmed, and who in all probability will be Maltese Premier League sides.
Inter have so far already confirmed a number of friendly matches.
Besides their training camp in Malta, Inter are expected to play three other friendlies. They face Real Betis in Seville on November 16 and are planning another warm up in Reggio Calabria on December 22 before facing Sassuolo in Reggio Emilia on December 28.
Should Inter’s training camp in Malta be confirmed, it will be their second visit to Malta in the new Millennium after their trip way back in 2002 when they played a friendly against the Malta FA selection.
