Mġarr United women’s team captain Brenda Borg has won the first Assikura Women’s League Player of the Month award for season 2022-23.
The first award of the new campaign, sponsored by Assikura Insurance Brokers PCC Limited, covers the months of September and October with Borg featuring in four matches for the Greens. Mġarr United picked up six points following victories against San Ġwann and Hibernians with the Malta international midfielder capping a series of fine performances with five goals, including four against the Saints.
“I am very pleased to win the first Assikura Women’s League Player of the Month award for season 2022/23,” Borg said.
“Although this is an individual award, it belongs to the entire Mġarr United team and technical staff as without their support, this would not have been possible.
“Awards like these increase my motivation to work harder and give my all in training and on the pitch to reach our objectives as a team.”
Meanwhile, Lexine Farrugia, of Raiders Lija, has been voted best player for September/October in the Assikura Women’s Youth League. The 15-year-old Farrugia, who joined the club from Birkirkara last summer, has been influential figure for her team as Raiders Lija lead the U-21 category with seven points from three games.
Farrugia, who was on the scoresheet in the 3-0 victory against San Ġwann on the opening day of the season, said: “I would like to thank my club, Raiders Lija, for making me feel so welcome. Football is my passion and I’m very happy to be fulfilling my dream, playing for both the senior and youth teams. This award gives me great encouragement to keep improving my game. It is also very nice to see that women’s football, even at youth level, is gaining more recognition.
Andrew Grech, Managing Director of Assikura Insurance Brokers PCC Ltd, presented the trophies to Borg and Farrugia at the company’s offices in Santa Venera.
