Malta international Jean Borg is set to pursue his career in Italy after the central defender has reached an agreement to join Italian Serie C club Fidelis Andria.

The 25-year-old defender has been a key member of Valletta FC for the past few years and his performances for both club and country have attracted the interest of Fidelis Andria.

Borg had a contract with Valletta FC until the end of the season but the defender had a clause in his contract that he could leave the Citizens if he received an offer from a foreign club.

The Italian club approached Borg this month and an agreement on personal terms was reached with the player set to leave Malta this week to start his adventure in Italy where he is due to sign a deal until the end of the season.

“I am really happy that I will finally fulfill my dream of playing football in a foreign league,” Borg told the Times of Malta.

“Since I started my football career I always harboured hopes that one day I can play abroad and I am so happy that this is coming to reality.

“I am really looking forward to this new challenge and I hope that in the next few months, I can show my qualities and hopefully I can prolong my stay abroad beyond this season.”

Borg has been with Valletta FC for the past eight years, and the Malta international admitted that it was hard for him to leave the capital club.

“It was not an easy decision for me to leave Valletta FC,” Borg said.

“Valletta FC was my home for the last eight years and I will always be grateful to this club for all the opportunities they have given me.

“I was blessed to win so many trophies with Valletta FC and these memories will stay with me forever.”

Borg is the second Maltese player to be joining Fidelis Andria in the last few years.

Carlo Zammit Lonardelli joined the Italian club in 2020, where he spent one season, before returning to the Maltese Premier League.
