Ħamrun Spartans are closing in on a major transfer coup as they have an agreement in place to sign Swedish striker Kalle Holmberg, sources have confirmed to the Times of Malta.
The Spartans have been scouring the market this month in search of a prolific goalscorer as they look to further strengthen their squad.
Ħamrun are currently enjoying a commanding 11-point lead at the top of the Premier League standings and look on course to win their second championship crown in the space of three years.
Added to that, they have also set their sights on not only winning the FA Trophy but also arriving for the UEFA competitions with a more competitive squad than last summer when they just missed out on a historic berth in the group stages of the UEFA Conference league when they were knocked out by Partizan Belgrade in the play-off round.
The Spartans looked at several profiles this month but after several talks held, the Premier League leaders have managed to secure an agreement with former Sweden international Holmberg.
Sources close to the player told the Times of Malta that the 29-year-old forward has accepted the offer of Ħamrun Spartans and is expected to arrive in Malta in the coming days to complete the move.
Holmberg has a very interesting CV as he has established himself as a prolific forward in the Swedish top flight. He started his career with Karlslunds IF before joining Orebro SK.
In 2016, Holmberg joined Norrkoping and enjoyed a bright first season in the Swedish top flight where he managed to finish as the league’s top scorer with 14 goals, and also was the most prolific striker in the Swedish Cup when he netted 10 goals.
His performances earned him a place in the Swedish national team and in fact he has managed to make four appearances with his country, scoring one goal which came in a friendly against Estonia in Tallinn, that finished in a 1-1 draw.
In January 2020, Holmberg joined Djurgardens, making 84 appearances and scoring 18 goals.
This year, Holmberg was part of the Djurgardens side that made it through the group stages of the UEFA Conference League.
Holmberg made four appearances in the group stages and managed to find the net once, in a 4-2 win over KAA Gent as Djurgarden topped Group F ahead of the same Belgian side.
