Rampant Birkirkara see off Mġarr in yet another victory

Leaders Birkirkara made little work of rivals Mġarr United to beat them 3-0 and extend their lead at the top of the Assikura Women’s League to nine points.

Swieqi United, who are second in the standings, are serving a bye and will return in next week’s action.

The Stripes profited from the Owls’ absence this week and cruised to their 83rd consecutive positive result in the domestic league with another commanding showing.

Jose Borg’s team rubbed shoulders with Michael Mangion’s Mġarr and had already opened a two-goal lead inside the first 15 minutes.

Sara Saliba and Raina Giusti made Birkirkara’s early pressure count to put themselves in the driving seat.

Veronique Mifsud scored the third goal to wrap up the Stripes’ 12th win of the season as edge closer towards their 11th women’s league title.

Mġarr, on their part, have now slipped to five points behind third-place Hibernians but with a game in hand and a direct encounter coming up in less than a week against the Paolites.

Keith Gouder’s Paolites secured their second straight win of the third round with a 4-0 win over San Ġwann.

Hibernians, who remain third on 25 points, opened the score through Alexis Espitia before Nicole Sciberras found the net – her second of the season, following last week’s maiden goal against Mtarfa.

After the change of ends, Yolande Attard and Martina Borg sealed the four-goal win for Hibernians as they recorded their eighth win of the season.

Raiders Lija moved to 19 points after beating Mtarfa 3-0, in the Wednesday game.

Summer signing Lexine Farrugia was the hero for Denis Guerra’s side with a hat-trick that lifted her to 13 goals.
