Roma Club Malta celebrating 50th anniversary from its foundation

Conti and Aldair invited for Malta celebrations

The Malta supporters club of the Italian Serie A side AS Roma is celebrating the 50th anniversary from its foundation.

Currently having around 200 members, the club holds the unique accolade of being the oldest Roma fan club outside Italy and has remained active in the club’s good and bad times throughout the last 50 years.  It is also a club that unites all Roma’s supporters in Malta.

The Roma Club Malta is celebrating this anniversary through a number of activities spread over the year.  Some of these are kept low profile so as to target the club members whilst others are given a more public dimension.

In March arrangements were made for a delegation to visit Roma legend Bruno Conti at the club’s training centre in Trigoria and present him with a token on behalf of the Malta club, honouring his long decades of service to AS Roma.

Conti treated the club’s representatives with his usual great friendliness and had a long discussion with them on the experience of the 1982 World Cup, on the Serie A win in season 1982-83 and the European Cup final of 1984.

Truly a champion both on and off the field, he also sent a video clip and a Roma Club scarf with a personal message for this special anniversary.

Then on the eve of the Malta vs Italy Euro qualifier, some of Roma Club Malta members had the pleasure of meeting current Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini at the hotel in which the Italian team was staying in Malta.

Even Pellegrini showed great courtesy and availability despite being on duty with his national team and was available for a discussion and photoshoot with the club members present.

Roma Club Malta president Ray Sant was also interviewed by Il Romanista, the journal of Roma’s supporters worldwide, where he gave some background on the Malta supporters club and on the 50th anniversary celebrations.

An invitation has also been extended to Brazil and Roma legend Aldair to visit the Malta club this spring and it is anticipated that a Roma Under 12 team will be playing here in May, with the hope that the contingent would be led by the great Bruno Conti himself, now head of the Roma nurseries.
