Construction works on the Corradino Sports Complex are set to get under way in the coming days.
The project will see the construction of a stadium that can host football matches according to UEFA standards as well as rugby union matches in line with the regulations of the International Rugby Board.
Details were given in a joint statement issued by the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects and the Ministry for Education, Sports, Youth, Research and Innovation.
The statement said that the project will cost €8.2 million.
“The €8.2 million complex includes the construction of a stadium and a ground with artificial turf that can seat 650 spectators,” the statement said.
“Local and international football and rugby games are expected to be played in this stadium once completed. This complex will house several other amenities such as changing rooms, offices, a conference room, a restaurant, a media room, and parking facilities.”
Minister Aaron Farrugia emphasised the significance of this investment, stating that in addition to vital infrastructural projects like our road network, the Government remains committed to advancing our sports infrastructure.
“The objective is to provide our athletes with the optimal environment for training and enhancing their skills,” Farrugia said.
On his part, Sports Minister Clifton Grima said: “This is another infrastructural commitment that will benefit our athletes. We promised to continue investing in sports facilities which are accessible to all.
“Thus, we are committed to provide our country with sports facilities of international standards that serve not only as a level playing field for athletes, but also as a foundation for the sports industry, which also attracts investment to our country.”
The project is being managed by Projects Plus Limited, which assumed responsibility for the works, the administrative and the technical tasks at an early stage.
The first phase of this project included an extensive excavation and the removal and exportation of tonnes of contaminated waste from this site.
In the coming days, the construction of the field and the parking lot will commence, as well as the installation of floodlights and the necessary fencing.
