Birkirkara to discover opponents in Women’s Champions League

Malta women champions Birkirkara will discover their opponents of this season’s Champions League in Friday’s draw.

The Stripes are among 41 national champions that will be drawn in Round 1 of the Champions Path of this competition.

The Malta champions will be drawn into one of 11 single-venue knockout mini-tournaments with either four teams or three times.

The semi-finals are scheduled for September 6 while the finals and third-place play-offs will be played three days later. The winners of the 11 finals will progress to Round 2.

The Stripes, fresh winners of their 11th Maltese championship, are unseeded in Pot 2.

Among the potential opponents in Pot 1 are Scotland’s Glasgow City, Portugal’s Benfica, Zurich of Switzerland, Ajax of the Netherlands and Belgium’s Anderlecht.

Last season, Birkirkara made history when they became the first Maltese side to win a match at this stage of the competition after beating Northern Ireland’s champions Glentoran 2-1, in Romania.

The final of this Champions League edition will be played in May, at Bilbao’s San Mames.
