Stripes to represent Malta in the competition between September 6-9
Birkirkara avoided the big guns in the semi-final of the first qualifying round of the Women’s Champions League as they will launch their European campaign against FK Breznica, champions of Montenegro.
Jose Borg’s side was drawn in the three-team Group 11 with the Montenegro representatives and Switzerland’s league winners, FC Zurich, who were handed a bye to the final given they are the seeded team.
The semi-finals, including Birkirkara against FK Breznica, are scheduled for September 6 while the final, should Birkirkara progress, will be played three days later.
The winners of the 11 finals will progress to Round 2 of the qualifying phase.
Last season, Birkirkara made history when they became the first Maltese side to win a match at this stage of the competition after beating Northern Ireland’s champions Glentoran 2-1, in Romania.
FK Breznica, on their part, lost their semi-final against Slovakia’s Spartak Myjava in last season’s edition.
They have won the 2022/2023 national championship with 58 points in 20 games, lifting their eighth title in club’s history history.
Their squad is composed mainly of Montenegro players, including national team representatives.
Malta and Montenegro faced each other in the recent 2023 Women’s World Cup qualifications, with both teams recording a victory each.
The final of this Champions League edition will be played in May, at Bilbao’s San Mames.
