They progress to second round together with Zach Muscat’s Farense
Cain Attard announced himself to Belenenses with a first-half goal in his Portuguese debut on Sunday.
The Malta international was given the nod to start for the second-tier side as they hosted Famalicao, a top-flight team in the first round of the domestic League Cup.
The former Birkirkara captain, whom he left this summer to embark in Portugal, scored a brilliant volley from the edge of the area to put his team ahead.
Attard, 28, started as a right-back in a four-man backline for Belenenses as won with a 100th-minute penalty in a dramatic first round tie.
In the next stage of the competition, they will face another first-tier side in Estoril Praia.
Meanwhile, Zach Muscat’s Farense advanced to the next round after beating Moreirense 4-3 on penalties.
Muscat was in the starting formation and played the whole game, with Farense leading up until stoppage time when their opponents scored the leveller.
However, Farense’s four converted penalties helped them progress to the next round where they meet UD Oliveirense.
