Neptunes WPSC issued a statement to condemn the behaviour of a San Ġiljan player who has bitten Sam Gialanze during the President’s Cup final that was played on Wednesday night.
The Balluta Bay club lifted the pre-season competition when they overcame San Ġiljan 15-9 at the National Pool.
However, according to Neptunes, the match was overshadowed by an incident involving a San Ġiljan player who allegedly bit Gialanze, who needed medical care at a hospital after the game.
Sources confirmed to Times of Malta that Neptunes had filed a report to the ASA and the Malta Police on the incident.
“Neptunes WPSC wishes to address the incident that occurred during yesterday’s President’s Cup Final between Neptunes WPSC and San Ġiljan ASC,” the club said in a statement.
“It is with great disappointment that the Club must report the unsportsmanlike and violent conduct of a player from the opposing team, who bit a Neptunes WPSC player during the match. The player concerned required medical care at the hospital following the game.
“This incident is particularly concerning because the opposing player appears to be the same individual in respect of whom serious concerns have previously been raised in connection with similar biting incidents and other disciplinary matters.
“Such conduct is wholly unacceptable. It places the safety and well-being of players at risk, sets a poor example for younger athletes, and is damaging to the image of local water polo, bringing the sport into disrepute.”
Neptunes WPSC condemned this conduct and called on San Ġiljan ASC to do the same, as well as for appropriate disciplinary measures to be taken against the player concerned.
“Neptunes WPSC trusts that the matter will be addressed through the Aquatic Sports Association’s disciplinary processes properly and in a timely manner, reflecting the seriousness of the incident.”
