Second former Balkan Fusion to join Mtarfa club this summer
Depiro BC confirmed their second signing of the summer on Wednesday when they named Bogdan Mrkojevic to their squad.
The former Balkan Fusion player joins compatriot Nikola Bozovic who was also brought to the club from the Division Two side this month. However, having been playing in Malta for the past five years, Mrkojevic will be able to play as a local under new Malta Basketball Association (MBA) regulations.
Speaking to the club’s socials, Mrkojevic showed enthusiasm towards the move.
“Really looking forward to the upcoming season as I feel we have the right ingredients for a successful season,” Mrkojevic said.
The 31-year-old guard, who played professionally for eight years in his home country Serbia, captained Balkan Fusion last season, leading the team to the Amateur Knock-Out title as well as a second-place regular season finish behind Depiro’s Amateur League side. Now, he makes the leap into Division One with a side that will be aiming to one-up their performance last season.
“Bogdan will strengthen our team and will give us more freedom in our team rotation. His experience, knowledge of the game, and talent will be an added boost to our team,” Depiro head coach Ruben Baldacchino said.
Andrew Aquilina cover
Mrkojevic, a shooting guard by trade, will also be a safety net for the club which has lost captain Andrew Aquilina until around January.
Aquilina, who suffered an Achilles tendon injury will be a tough loss for Baldacchino’s squad for the first half of the season and Mrkojevic will be stepping in for cover.
“He (Mrkojevic) will help us in the absence of Andrew Aquilina following his surgery,” Baldacchino told the Times of Malta, “then we’ll have both together as we aim to have Andrew back in January.”
