Saudi side to launch second-tier campaign tonight
Head of Analysis at Ħamrun Spartans Dominic Mahoney has announced that his time at the Maltese champions has come to an end as he will embark in Saudi Arabian football.
Born in the United Kingdom but grew up in Malta, Mahoney was appointed as first team assistant coach and head of analysis at Ħamrun Spartans last season.
Alongside coach Branko Nisevic, Mahoney’s analysis was instrumental as the Spartans went on a remarkable European journey in the UEFA Europa Conference League eliminating Alashkert, Velez Mostar and Levski Sofia to reach the play-offs.
At domestic level, Mahoney became a Maltese champion after the Spartans dominated last season’s championship as they finished at the top with a 19-point margin ahead of second-place Birkirkara.
Mahoney will join Al-Qadsiah in the second-tier of Saudi football where he will be assisting former Liverpool player Robbie Fowler as head analyst.
The former England striker was appointed manager of the club back in June after his experience in Indian football at East Bengal FC during the 2020/2021 season and his most recent experience as a coach at Oxford United.
Al-Qadsiah launch their bid to a possible promotion to the top-flight tonight as they host Al Adalah.
Former Everton goalkeeper Joel Robles, Luciano Vietto – known for his Villarreal spell, Peru’s forward Andre Carillo and Mbaye Diagne (played in England and Turkey) are among Al-Qadsiah’s key players that will push for a successful season.
