Thompson in second Division One stint
Former Gzira Athleta point guard Kwame Thompson will be playing his second stint in Malta this coming season after joining Division One side Mellieha Libertas.
The signing was announced by last season’s runners-up on Saturday as their second import player signing of the summer after Tedrick Wolfe. However, having joined Athleta back in 2016 after leaving Newbury College in the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA), Thompson will be a valuable asset to coach Ian Terribile’s clan through his experience in the league.
In his rookie season in Malta, the 5’11 guard had already averaged 31 points a game.
Since leaving Athleta, the now 31-year-old has had stints in Mexico, Peru, Jamaica and Morocco.
In a statement on their socials, Mellieha welcomed Thompson.
“Welcome back to Malta Kwame Thompson,” the statement read, “The point guard from Boston brings to the team his skills and his work ethic. Welcome to Mellieha.”
This is Mellieha’s fourth major announcement this summer after switching head coaches to Terribile, also making his return to basketball after having been the coach of the same club when they were in Division Two.
Libertas then added US forward Wolfe, Local guard Ryan Carabott who joined from Starlites, and centre Klemen Skrabek last week who is also accustomed to Maltese basketball.
