Vince Galea’s side scored two wins in three matches
A comeback victory over Azerbaijan handed Malta U-17’s a brilliant finish to their European Championship qualifications in Croatia.
Led by coach Vince Galea, Malta faced Azerbaijan in their final group game and the latter forged ahead through Kanim Asadova inside the opening four minutes.
Malta managed to level terms through Swieqi United’s midfielder Kaysia Micallef on the 26th minute.
Galea’s selection continued to push to take the lead and two goals by captain Lexine Farrugia between the 47th and 52nd minute saw Malta open a two-goal lead.
Pomigliano forward Sara Saliba wrapped up the win with Malta’s fourth on the 64th minute.
It was the perfect follow up after Malta’s 2-1 win over Luxembourg in their second group game, on Friday.
Hibernians’ player Nyorah Celeste and Saliba had scored Malta’s goals in that win.
Malta had launched its qualifying campaign with a heavy 8-0 defeat against group favourites Croatia.
With three solid wins, Croatia move to League A while Malta finished second in this B3 group.
The best runner-up will join the Group B winners in League with Malta having to wait until all the remaining qualifying campaigns in League B finish to see whether they will be promoted as well.
