Joint-leaders Swieqi United and Hibernians to meet Birkirkara, Mġarr United respectively
An important weekend of Assikura Women’s League action is coming up with the top four teams in the championship set to face each other in Matchday 9.
Swieqi United, joint-leaders with Hibernians, will have a rematch against champions Birkirkara while the Paolites face Mġarr United.
The Owls scored a late winner to halt Birkirkara’s impressive 92-game unbeaten run in the league, just last week.
Ghana forward Karima Abdulai grabbed the all-important goal which propelled Swieqi into first place with 19 points after eight games.
Last weekend, Saviour Darmanin’s side hit Mtarfa for 10 with Salamatu Abdulai, another forward hailing from Ghana, now leading the league’s scoring charts with 13 goals.
Birkirkara, on their part, will be looking to make amends for last week’s defeat and clinch three important points that would lift them above Swieqi.
The Stripes are at the back of a victory over Lija Athletic as they sit third with 18 points.
Marta Grosso grabbed one of Birkirkara’s four goals as the Italian midfielder is the club’s best scorer with seven goals so far.
In the other big game of the weekend, Hibernians take on Mġarr at Dingli Ground.
The Paolites are at the back of a win over Valletta which kept them sharing top spot with Swieqi United.
On the other hand, Mġarr defeated San Ġwann 7-0 and boast two of the best three scorers in the league so far – Joelma with 10 goals and Fernanda Peinado with 9 goals, both joining during this summer transfer window.
Mġarr sit fourth with 17 points.
In the previous round, the two teams produced one of the most thrilling games of the season as they shared six goals in a 3-3 stalemate.
Elsewhere, Valletta face Mtarfa while San Ġwann take on Lija Athletic.
The Citizens, who lost in their recent league outing, have nine points as they eye their fourth win of the season against an Mtarfa side that is still looking for the first points of the campaign.
Meanwhile, San Ġwann and Lija are both on four points with the two teams settling for a 1-1 draw in the first round encounter.
