Maltese official was supported by three more local officials in Belgium.
Local referee Trustin Farrugia Cann was appointed as match official for the important UEFA Europa Conference League tie between Genk and Cukaricki, on Thursday.
Genk, representing Belgium, were hosting the game, and needed to beat Serbia’s Cukaricki to keep their hopes of progressing the group alive.
However, Ferencvaros’ draw at home to Fiorentina meant that these two teams will be playing in the next knock-out round while Genk suffer an early exit in Europe’s third-tier.
The Belgian side won 2-0 despite playing with ten man after Farrugia Cann gave the marching orders to Matias Galarza for violent conduct on the 33rd minute, following a VAR review.
The Maltese official showed four yellow cards in this game as he was supported by assistant referees Luke Portelli and Robert Vella together with Ishmael Barbara in the role of fourth official.
The VAR team consisted of Bartosz Frankowski and Pawel Pskit from Poland.
